ANALYSIS WITH HEAVY-IONS OF THE AMORPHIZATION UNDER IRRADIATION OF ZR(FE,CR)2 PRECIPITATES IN ZIRCALOY-4

In order to improve the knowledge of the physical mechanisms of amorphisation under irradiation of Zr(Fe,Cr)2 precipitates in Zircaloy-4 (Zry-4), heavy ion irradiation has been performed at different temperatures (315 to 775 K) and doses (0.5 to 12 dpa). The crystalline to amorphous transformation has been observed after high doses at low temperature. Some release of Fe and Cr from the precipitate into the matrix was found only after the amorphous transformation. The analysis of the results and related observations performed after various types of irradiation lead us to conclude that the amorphous transformation can be considered as a phase transformation induced by the excess free energy due to point defect accumulation, and that the chemical change is driven by the broken chemical equilibrium after the amorphous phase transformation of the crystal. © 1990.
