Comparison of design specification of steel single unequal angle section used as beams/purlins subjected to biaxial bending moment by various standard codes using Abaqus software

Single unequal angle section purlins are used widely in modern roof construction and there is a lack of information that is given by various standard codes in the design of single unequal angle sections, so this research will collect this information from these standard codes to design the single unequal angle section under a biaxial bending moment. Multinational companies are working around the globe—students are migrating to different developed countries for higher technical education. Therefore, there is a necessity to study the review of various national codes. Dead load and live load do not pass in the shear center, so the angle section purlin is subjected to biaxial moments and torsion. Because of the thin legs of the angle section, it is subjected to buckling and many standard codes (Indian Standard, American National Standard, British Standard, European Standard, and Canadian and Japanese codes) ignore the effect of torsion and buckling. Indian and British regulations use specific formulas to design the angle section. Therefore, there is a necessity to study comparing specifications of the design of the angle section. Therefore, this paper will study the review standard codes and make a comparison between them and compare the results with Abaqus software results and also solve a numerical example to find the required section of angle section purlin using various standard code formulas compared to Abaqus results that verified by general solution method and also find the relationship between deflections and stresses for various standard codes using Abaqus software. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
