Vortioxetine (Brintellix®), a serotonin transporter inhibitor and modulator of serotonin receptor activity, extends the available options for treating major depressive disorder (MDD). It is generally effective as acute treatment (including in elderly patients), in relapse prevention and as maintenance treatment in patients with MDD. Vortioxetine improves cognitive function in patients with MDD and is generally well tolerated. © 2015, Springer International Publishing Switzerland.
