Financialization of the South African economy

This article discusses important aspects of the financialization of the South African economy during the post-apartheid period. The growth of the financial services sector and financialization of the economy has led to misallocation of capital within the economy that has hindered much needed structural economic change. The lack of structural change has led to an inability to deal with socio-economic legacies of colonialism and apartheid related to very high levels of inequality, poverty and unemployment. © 2017 Society for International Development.
