People with an intellectual disability value work as a significant part of their lives, and many of them want to participate in regular paid employment. However, current estimates show that very few actually have paid employment. We conducted a systematic review exploring what work environment related factors contribute to obtaining or maintaining paid work for people with an intellectual disability. Databases of PubMed, PsychINFO, CINAHL, Embase and Web of Science were searched for recently published English papers over a 20 year period. Twenty-six papers were included, in only four of which the perspective of the worker with intellectual disability was included. Papers clustered around four themes. No Dutch studies were found. Employers with experience in hiring people with intellectual disability were more positive than employers without such experience. The importance of job coaching was emphasized. More evidence based knowledge is needed to advance work integration of people with intellectual disability. © 2016, Stichting tot Bevordering der Bedrijfs- en Verzekeringsgeneeskunde.
