The dependence of the size of a carbon nanotube bundle on the size of catalytic particles and separate nanotubes was calculated. The size of bundles was shown to be determined by the distortions of van der Waals bonds between nanotubes in the vicinity of a catalytic particle and nanotube bending in the bundle. Both effects increased as the thickness of the bundle grew. The calculated bundle sizes were compared with the experimental data on growing nanotubes obtained by the chemical vapor deposition, arc, and laser methods.
