Synthesis and characterization of a new biolubricant based on oligoesterification of ricinoleic acid, oxalic acid, and ethylene glycol

Ricinoleic acid, the main fatty acid in castor oil (around 90%), is an excellent starting material to obtain biochemicals because of having two functional groups (carboxylic acid and hydroxyl). In this work was prepared a new biolubricant based on the oligo-esterification of ricinoleic acid, oxalic acid, and ethylene glycol. The new compound was characterized by infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear resonance magnetic (1H-NMR) spectroscopies. Besides, thermal stability, viscosity, viscosity index, pour point and oxidative stability of the new oligomer were measured showing good performance as lubricant, with potential to substitute lubricants from petrochemical resource.
