Steady-state plastic deformation of the surface layer induced by the rolling and sliding of a rigid cylinder is investigated using ideal plastic plane strain theory taking into consideration contact friction. The plastic region and length of the contact arc related to the forces and the moment applied to the cylinder are calculated. Results are studied for rolling friction theory in the case of large contact loads and for surface plastic-layer deformation to increase the wear resistance and fatigue strength of machine parts.
