The present overview of the biomarker 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) is published as part of the series "Tumor markers" of the Zentralblatt fur Arbeitsmedizin, Arbeitsschutz und Ergonomie, which deals with the increasing use of the determination of specific markers in so-called manager precaution and check-up examinations. In principle, 5-HIAA is not suitable for such precautionary measures but is a marker for the treatment, progression and recurrence control of neuroendocrine tumors. In this respect it shows a high sensitivity and specificity but it should not be used in any case for early diagnostics as a screening marker. In several older studies, 5-HIAA was discussed as a biomarker for peptic ulcers but nowadays 5-HIAA has no clinical relevance in this context.
