In an attempt to control CaCO3 deposits in industrial recycling water systems, a maleic anhydride-β-cyclodextrins-acrylic acid-8-hydroxy-1, 3, 6-pyrenetrisulfonic acid trisodium salt (MA–β-CD–AA–PA) copolymer was synthesized by free-radical polymerization. The structure of the copolymer was characterized using FT-IR, 1H NMR, and TGA. The MA–β-CD–AA–PA exhibited an excellent ability to control inorganic minerals, with 95.8 % CaCO3 inhibition at level of 10 mg l−1 MA–β-CD–AA–PA, which suggested that the prepared copolymer was an excellent scale inhibitor. The copolymer showed the same fluorescence as pyranine. The fluorescence intensity of the copolymer was directly proportional to its concentration.
