Discusses the approaches used in an attempt to improve oral cancer awareness through national and community-based campaigns.Provides an overview of the effectiveness of interventions aimed at raising cancer awareness and promoting early presentation with cancer symptoms. Highlights the limited evidence of long-term effectiveness of such campaigns to date and the need for further work.Proposes that awareness interventions should be based on longer-term, multi-faceted approaches, acknowledging the social determinants of the disease and health behaviour theory.
