The DICOM standard is presently a component of medical equipment (computer tomographs, MRI, ultrasonic scanners, etc.) of leading manufacturers of radiological devices (Picker, GE, Siemens, HP, Phillips) and the overwhelming majority of archiving systems for medical images. This standard was approved by many national organizations (e.g., CEN TC251 in Europe, JIRA in Japan). It is completely obvious that DICOM is a well-developed standard which should be taken into consideration by Russian developers and manufacturers of medical equipment. The introduction of the DICOM standard should start from simple DICOM-converters and servers for archiving and printing. Then more advanced DICOM applications will be available. Work in this direction is presently in progress at the Moscow Institute for Electronic Technology.
