Children born after assisted reproduction have an increased risk of preterm birth or a low birth weight. These risks seem to be caused by the parents' infertility. The risk of congenital malformations is increase by 30%. Children who are born at term with a normal birth weight develop in the same way as spontaneously conceived children. In addition, it is unclear whether the increased risk of cerebral palsy is only due to the increased number of preterm births and the increased multiple birth rate or whether assisted reproduction itself contributes to this risk. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
