Shear strengthening viscosity of a Shengli crude oil

The viscosity of crude oil is of importance in development and pipeline transportation. The shear thickening phenomenon of viscosity of a Shengli crude oil was studied by steady shear and transient shear experiments at 16.6 °C, which is about 2.2 °C higher than its pour point. The crude oil appears shear thickening viscosity at the low shear rate from 0.001 s−1 to approximate 0.05 s−1 in experiments, which is reported secondly here and similar to the viscosity-thickening behavior of the oil reported firstly in 2017. The shear thickening becomes weak as the temperature rises in the steady shear experiment. Shearing at a low shear rate can strengthen or increase the viscosity of the crude oil.
