A substantial proportion of the genome is transcribed into non-coding RNAs, including many long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that are important regulators of endocrine cellsMany research findings point towards an important role of lncRNAs in regulating the development and maintenance of endocrine organs and hormonal signalling; misregulation of these processes can lead to diseaseThe biological functions of lncRNAs in endocrine organs are poorly understood; genetic models are needed to fully assess the role of lncRNAs in a variety of homeostatic processes in vivolncRNAs can be potentially developed as novel diagnostic markers to identify and classify certain tumours
