Dependency and imperialism in the new times: A latin american perspective

Theories of imperialism and dependency seem to be superseded by an emerging orthodoxy of globalisation as the overarching explanatory framework for development in the current era. This article charts a critical archaeology of these older approaches to place them in their historical context. It also explores more recent contributions to a critical development theory from feminism, postmodernism and other currents. Rather than reassert superseded orthodoxies or uncritically embrace the new, this article calls for a renewal of a certain critical spirit which was present in the original dependency approach in Latin America. © 1999 European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes.
