New neurons are continuously added to the adult brain but how this affects brain function is unclear. By developing a new single-cell gene knock-out technique, Tashiro et al. show that new neurons are selected for survival depending on their synaptic input. This provides a possible mechanism for the building of new yet consistent neuronal circuits during learning and memory. In the image above, new neurons in adult dentate gyrus are visualized by retrovirus-mediated expression of green fluorescence protein. The dentate granule and CA3 pyramidal cell layers were visualized by immunostaining for NeuN.
