FACULTY GENDER EFFECTS ON ACADEMIC RESEARCH AND TEACHING

This paper estimates the effects of facultygender differences on research and teachingproductivities, using a sample of 523 four-year-plusinstitutions of higher education for the academic year1987-88. Female and male faculty inputs along with anadministrative staff input are used to estimate threejoint-product production functions for three outputsfrom undergraduate teaching, graduate teaching, and research. The main research results show thatfemale faculty have significant marginal productivity inresearch at liberal arts institutions but not atinstitutions in other Carnegie categories. Oneexplanation for this finding is the limitations withrespect to employment and discipline patterns of usingresearch expenditures to measure research output. Theresults are compared to earlier findings based onindividual faculty survey responses.
