This paper summarizes the discourse on instructional quality in the field of English as a Foreign Language Education. It particularly emphasizes the need to adapt the dimension of ‘cognitive activation’ for researching the communicative language classroom. It further sketches prior studies on instructional quality in the field language education. Finally, it highlights links between the subject-specific discourse on characteristics of ‘good’ foreign language teaching and the synthesis framework on (sub-)dimensions of instructional quality by Praetorius et al.
