Pit and fissure sealants are an effective preventive technology for children at high risk of dental decay as long as the sealant is retained.Autopolymerizing sealants and visible light curing sealants have high retention rates; glass ionomer cements have lower retention rates and their use is not recommended.Isolation of the tooth from contamination by saliva is the most important aspect of sealant placement.Cost-effectiveness requires that only those sites, surfaces and teeth at greatest risk should be sealed.
