Brake parachutes play an important role in aircraft landings as they are designed to slow down the speed of an aircraft. The brake parachutes are effective, especially for landing on the slippery surface during the regular and emergency landings of the aircraft. In this paper, an algorithm is developed to design a ring-slot type brake parachute based on deployment speed and required dynamic characteristics. A computational model is developed using MATLAB to simulate the behaviour of the canopy of ring-slot type brake parachute during inflation and after inflation. The methodology is explained through a case study of designing a ring-slot type brake parachute for a light weight aircraft in the range of 900–26000 kg. © 2022, The Institution of Engineers (India).
