Efficient Seamless Handover Mechanism and Mobility Management for D2D Communication in 5G Cellular Networks

To satisfy the customer demands, the future wireless communication network can be equipped with high speed connectivity. The 5G technology is going to be a revolutionary technology among them. After the evolution of Device to Device (D2D) communication from LTE-A, it is expected to be one of the most reliable and more secure technology for direct communication. The primary target of the 5G cellular networks is to maintain the QoS especially when devices are in motion. Specifically, the ping-pang effect affects the handover performance of the D2D pair. Because of such mobility, more handover failure occurs which leads to interrupt and unreliable communication. This paper proposes Ping-Pong effect Reduction (PPR) algorithm to enhance the handover mechanism of the D2D user based on the Reference Point Group Mobility (RPGM) model. The mode selection algorithm is also proposed to select the suitable mode of transmission in 5G Cellular network for D2D user. The performance of the proposed algorithms is verified and validated with various performance metrics such as the unnecessary handover rate, missing handover rate, throughput etc. From the performance evaluation it is observed that the proposed PPR handover algorithm is reduced upto 80% in unnecessary handover with the stable throughput of 12 Mbps which leads to reduction in power consumption. Also the proposed algorithms are compared with existing algorithms to claim the superiority.
