Optimum design of cable-stayed bridges considering cable loss scenarios

In modern bridges, the distance between two adjacent cables is significantly shorter compared to older bridges. As a result, in the case of car accidents or explosions on newer bridges, it is more likely that multiple cables may rupture. It has been proposed to consider the possibility of all cables within a 10-m range tearing when designing bridges. The structural behavior of the girder in a long cable-stayed bridge following the sudden rupture of one of its cables is a matter of concern. Recent research has delved into the issue of cable failure in cable-stayed bridges, revealing that such failures can induce structural system instability and generate substantial bending moments on the bridge girder. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
