In recent decades, Jewish education in Britain has undergone considerable changes both in organization and content. The central change has been the growth of the Jewish day school and the subsequent decline of synagogue classes (Hebrew school). This major structural transformation is likely to have long-term implications for the Jewish community. These developments have taken place against a backdrop of demographic decline and geographic concentration of the Jewish community. The inconsistency between the demographic decrease and the expansion of Jewish day schools is the focus of this study, which describes and analyzes these developments in Jewish education and examines the origins of these trends and the factors affecting them.
