Logic has several functions in the framework of artificial intelligence and has essentially different roles. Logic being a language, its foremost function is to represent knowledge and reasoning. Logic is also serve as a computational tool. The logic-programming language Prolog is perhaps one of the most concrete examples of the use of logic for the purpose of automatic computation. The role of logic as computational method and algorithmic model is, and in the future will, increasingly be played by connectionist technique. Logic will always keep its key position as reference formalism for the representation of knowledge and reasoning.
