This survey is devoted to the construction of several counterexamples that can be given in combinatorial PI-theory when dealing with growth of varieties of non-associative algebras. These are examples of non-associative algebras over a field of characteristic zero constructed from Sturmian or periodic words. © 2015, Instituto de Matemática e Estatística da Universidade de São Paulo.
