Effect of fluctuations in the charge of accelerated ions on Cherenkov radiation

Fluctuations in the charge of accelerated multiply charged ions moving in a medium produce correlation effects in the Cherenkov radiation generated by these ions. An analysis of this phenomenon shows that the stochastic process of ion recharge leads to smearing of the radiation wave front and a transformation of the angular and spectral density of radiation. This effect is determined by the mean square deviation of the ion charge from its equilibrium value and provides a nonzero contribution to the Cherenkov radiation yield if the threshold condition is not satisfied.
