Electro-magnetic confinement for dynamic multiaxial compression experiments

A new experimental technique for imposing controlled dynamic confinement on specimens subjected to high-strain-rate uniaxial compression has been developed. The axial compression is provided by a split Hopkinson pressure bar, and the lateral confinement is applied by an electromagnetic pressure. The results show that, under dynamic confinement of ∼10 MPa, the compressive strength of a brittle glass ceramic increases by ∼20% as compared to its un-confined failure strength. It is also observed that the propensity of the ceramic to fragmentation or conminution is suppressed by dynamic confinement.
