The problem of subdivision protection consists of isolating the section of a power system from its remaining part when an unsafe perturbation occurs or an emergency situation develops. A change in the structure of the generating powers, involving the active introduction of a low power into the power plant system, may require supplementations or a review of the criteria and algorithms of traditionally used subdivision protections. The main functions and operating principles of subdivision protections in electric power systems, containing a low-power electric plant, are considered, new requirements are formulated on subdivision protection, due to the increase in the fraction of such power plants in the power generating system, and suggestions for improving voltage subdivision automation are given. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.
