Orphans of the americas: Why the existence of zambo societies has been denied

Much scholarship, in a number of different disciplines, has been devoted to the study of mulattos, and mestizos, but little to zambos. This paper begins with an examination of efforts made in the American colonial period and then demonstrates how internalized decisions made by Indians and African Americans worked against zambo societies.
