Movement data of persons, vehicles, and other objects are available in increasingly large amounts due to the technical advances in positioning sensors and their pervasiveness. A fully automatic analysis ofmovement patterns is difficult for complex spatial and temporal structures, especially if data is affected by uncertainties or semantic information is missing. The problems can be addressed by appropriate combination of automatic processing with visualization techniques and user-driven exploration. In this paper, the basic approach of visual analysis of movement is described and practical examples of movement information in video streams and in geospatial context are discussed. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.
