The three 'A's of treating chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome: Antibacterials, α-adrenergic receptor antagonists and anti-inflammatory agents

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome is a painful prostate condition, which may affect men of all ages. It is the most frequently occurring of the four categorized types of prostatitis, but the pathophysiology of the condition is not well understood. Apart from pain, the condition may be associated with urinary symptoms, sexual dysfunction and infertility. Treatment is symptomatic, including pharmacotherapy with antibacterial agents with or without α-adrenergic receptor antagonists for urinary symptoms, and/or anti-inflammatory agents for pain. © 2009 Adis Data Information BV.
