Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) is gaining increasing momentum in colorectal surgery as a hybrid technique for transvaginal and transrectal specimen retrieval. The major technical challenge is the anastomosis which can be prepared extracorporeally (transvaginal) or can be constructed totally intracorporeally (transvaginal or transrectal). These innovative techniques allow further reduction of access trauma. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
