This Review discusses some of the most innovative and controversial aspects of the follow-up protocols for patients with differentiated or medullary thyroid cancer. In particular, new and controversial options related to more sensitive laboratory testing, molecular analysis for planning innovative therapeutic strategies and nuclear imaging techniques are highlighted.
