Hoya Binh Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Da river in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam: Ten years of service

Construction of this 1920MW hydropower plant, the largest such project in South East Asia was completed at the end of 1994 with first power being generated in 1988. The plant was built with technical assistance from the Soviet Union. It has operated reliably since start up and contributes significantly to the national economy and its development. This article discusses this positive contribution in terms of providing electricity supplies, reducing the risk of catastrophic flooding, and improving irrigation and river navigation.
