Structure of Carbon Nanotubes Synthesized by Ethylene Decomposition Over Cobalt Supported on Basic Oxides

A study was carried out on the structure of carbon nanotubes obtained on coprecipitated Co/MgO and Co/CaO catalysts. Regardless of the nature of the basic support, the use of cobalt catalysts leads to the formation of cylindrical nanotubes with identical diameters. The similar structure of the nanotubes is attributed to the formation of cobalt nanoparticles of identical size upon the reduction of the different mixed oxides during preparation of the catalysts. Such nanotubes grow by the “tip-growth” mechanism.
