摘要
America cast the cold war as one of history's great religious wars, between the godless and the god-fearing, between good and evil. The significance religion was accorded in the American approach to cold war politics had a notable impact on Anglo-American relations as religion became a measure not simply for a nation's morality and justice, but also for democracy and freedom. It was an approach that impacted not only on the nature and conduct of the transatlantic alliance, but one that was to have significant repercussions on ecclesiastical leaders in their dealings with each other and the Vatican. © 2012 Copyright Board of Transatlantic Studies.
