Die obere gastrointestinale Blutung ist ein häufiger und komplexer Notfall. Es gibt Richtlinien zur akutmedizinischen Versorgung, etablierte endoskopische Behandlungen sowie chirurgische und radiologische Rescue-Verfahren. Dennoch ist die Sterblichkeit hoch, was dadurch bedingt ist, dass die betroffenen Patienten meist erheblich vorerkrankt sind.
