Forensic psychiatry is an important part of psychiatry which is especially in public view. This paper summarizes the judicial framework and basic principles in testimony concerning criminal responsibility and criminal prognosis. An interdisciplinary work group has established minimal standards for both these topics, which are also described. They comprise a good example in psychiatry and law for developing quality assurance in this important field. © 2008 Springer Medizin Verlag.
