Die Arbeitsforschung in Deutschland thematisiert die wirtschaftlichen Folgen arbeitsorganisatorischer Konzepte selten auf der Grundlage empirischer Daten zur Leistungsfähigkeit von Unternehmen. Aussagen zur wirtschaftlichen Leistungsfähigkeit von Produktionsmodellen sind deshalb wenig abgesichert. Bis etwa zum Jahr 2006 gab es in den USA, in England und Kanada eine lebhafte Debatte über sogenannte High Performance Work Systems (HPWS), die in Deutschland kaum rezipiert wurde. Grundlage waren ökonometrische Studien zur Absicherung von Aussagen zur Wirtschaftlichkeit von Gestaltungskonzepten. Für die zukünftige deutsche Arbeitsforschung ist es aussichtsreich, den Forschungsansatz der HPWS Studien aufzugreifen und methodisch weiter zu entwickeln.
