By means of the generic isodesmic reaction C6H5COX + RCH3 → C6H5COCH3 + RX, the phenyl/vinyl thermochemical equivalence, and an experimental determination of the enthalpy of the Curtius rearrangement of acryloyl azide, the resonance energy of acyl azides was ascertained to be ca. 29 kJ mol−1.
