摘要
The use of alternated cation–anion exchange membrane (ACAEM) assembly to enhance the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is presented. ACAEM assembly is fabricated using a combination of anion and cation exchange membranes. It is observed that higher open circuit voltage and power densities are obtained using the ACAEM assembly in comparison to individual anion exchange membrane (AEM) or cation exchange membrane (CEM). The enhancement in performance is attributed to the increased conduction mechanism of the ion exchange membranes due to significant edge effects. In addition to the edge effect, cooperative behavior of both AEM and CEM leading to an increase in the number of ions, which cross from anode to the cathode side and become available for recombination. It is also shown that significant modification in polymer surface takes place as a function of operation time. This observation is believed to be one of the possible reasons which results in the loss of MFC performance.
