Occurrence of metabolic alkalosis in rumen lactic acidosis: A review article

The pH of the extracellular fluids is one of the most vigorously regulated variables of the body. Acidosis is associated with an increase in hydrogen ion concentration (decreasing pH), whereas alkalosis is caused by a decrease in hydrogen ion concentration (increasing pH). The published literature indicates that the occurrence of metabolic alkalosis in acute rumen lactic acidosis is most probable in the early and end stages of sub-acute rumen lactic acidosis or acute cases resulting from rumen lactic acidosis. © 2010 Springer-Verlag London Limited.
