Normal cellular morphology of the blood of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

Blood samples were collected from the wing vein of 75 clinically healthy quails (Coturnix coturnixjaponica) according to their age (<1 week, 3, 5 and >5 weeks) and sex. The blood smears were stained using the Giemsa, Wright and new methylene blue methods. The result indicated that blood cell morphology in quails is similar to that in chickens and other birds. Age had a significant effect on lymphocyte size (p=<0.05), whereas sex had a significant effect on the width of reticulocytes and small lymphocytes (p =<0.05).
