NESDeM II - A development methodology for knowledge-based systems expert systems

There has been an increased number of knowledge-based systems/expert systems (KBS/ES) being developed and integrated into corporate systems. However, compared with the conventional software engineering field, KBS development methodologies are still being overlooked. A review of current literature found that despite the increasing concern that has been paid to provide models for knowledge based development and evaluation methodologies, there is no common agreement between authors on a comprehensive framework for KBS development. The major aim of this paper is to address this issue and present a framework for KBS development. The Normative Expert System Development Methodology (NESDeM) developed by Jamieson and Ching in 1988 has provided a significant explorative step toward a complete KBS development life cycle. A revised version of this framework (NESDeM II) is developed and presented.
