Some critical reflections on the future of gold mining in Mali

Mali experienced an unprecedented political and security crisis in 2012, which affected all economic sectors apart from gold mining. Despite being engulfed in civil war, the gold mining sector accounted for 68% of the country's export revenues that year. It continues to attract investment in its gold mining sector, and two major projects have since been launched. Although there remains considerable uncertainty around Mali politically, as this brief points out, the future of gold mining in the country remains bright, as investors do not appear discouraged by widespread civil unrest.
