Large-scale corridors and long-term landscape change

Although the formation and management of small-scale landscape corridors constitutes a vigorous branch of research in landscape ecology, relatively little is known about large-scale corridors (at least 250metres wide). Consequently, this study aims to tackle the question "What is the impact of long-term landscape change on large-scale landscape corridors ?" From a detailed analysis of long-term lands-cape change in the region east of Athens (Greece), in context with the large-scale corridors, it is concluded that the dynamics of large-scale corridors, in each year, can be evaluated from the ratio L/N, where L stands for the total length of corridors and N stands for the total number of corridors for that kind of land use. Further, it was found that a) the ratio L/N is inversely analogue to the area occupied by each one kind of land. use and. b) the ratios L/N increase with time for all three kinds of land use considered (this reflects the deforestation and the conversion of agricultural land into shrubland in the region).
