摘要
Background: Trace elements are the essential elements that are involved in systematic development and proper functioning of the human body. In beta thalassemia patients, variations of their concentration that eventually lead to the death of erythrocytes and hence worsen the disorder, have been reported. Objective: The purpose of the current study was to compare the concentration and correlation between two trace elements, selenium and copper. in beta thalassetnia major (BTM) patients and healthy blood donors (controls). Materials and methods: A total of 408 samples including 204 BTM patients and the same number of controls were included in this study. Serum selenium and copper levels were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results: The mean level of copper in controls was 88.33 +/- 8.633 mu g/dL, but it was decreased to 39.55 +/- 8.766 mu g/dL in BTM patients. The mean selenium concentration in controls was 86.80 +/- 8.601 mu g/L; in BTM patients. it was 39.18 +/- 7.207 mu g/L. A significant positive correlation was found between copper and selenium in both BTM patients and controls (r = 0.89, p = 0.000). Conclusion: BTM patients are deficient in trace elements: so they are more prone to infections and other secondary complications due to oxidative damage to cells. Mineral and trace element supplements should be given to these patients so that BTM patients can better cope with this disease.
