Update on genital herpes - Incidence, treatment, and prevention

Genital herpes is an important condition, not only in terms of the severity of the acute clinical first episode but also because possible complications can lead to hospitalization. Recurrences of genital herpes can be clinically obvious; atypical (leading to difficulties in diagnosis); or hidden (resulting in misdiagnosis). Asymptomatic shedding from intact genital epithelium poses the risk of transmission to sexual partners even if barrier methods are used consistently. Safe and effective antiviral agents are available for the symptomatic relief of both first and recurrent episodes and for use as prophylaxis in those with frequent recurrences.
