Teaching of geotechnical engineering in the civil engineering departments of the Institut Universitaire de Technology in France

Some French Institutes of Technology are preparing "specialized technicians" after 2 years of studies. There are during this period between 30 and 110 teaching hours dedicated to geotechnical engineering. The Report offers a detailed description of didactic programmes in this field. It is emphasized that these programmes are now under the form of drafts, because they have to be analyzed and sanctioned by the French National Teaching Commission. Two main characteristics are to be remarked: (1) teaching activity does not follow a linear progression, but rather a cyclic advance in time; (2) practical applications related to physical and mechanical properties of soils come first, being followed by a second part, when theoretical chapters, reserved mainly to soil mechanics, are presented and discussed.
